First Day in the Books!

First Day!

The seminar speakers this morning:
  • Cleveland's Chief of Police/ liaison of homeland security for the Convention
  • Secret Service Special Agent
  • Representative from the Host Committee
  • Dr. Brendan Doherty

This morning we where briefed by the chief of police on security for the convention.
Cleveland Police officers are not going to wear riot gear because they want to present a more welcoming image to protesters by not looking like a militia.

3,000 Officers consisting of state, local, and national departments will be present and not 15,000 that I quoted last night.
1,500 Local Police Officer
450 State Troopers
300 Bike Cops
36 Officers Mounted on Horseback

The top 3 goals for security are
1. Transportation
2. Delegate Experience
3. Public Safety

The Chief of Police gave a very descriptive presentation and answered a lot of questions.  The Secret Service Agent spoke about security from his perspective and noted that the "highest calling one can accept is government service" The last riot where tear gas had to be deployed was 27 years ago

The Host Committee

50,000 Visitors

Received a $50 Million safety grant to prep the city

$200 million is the estimate for direct spending
They are also looking for more volunteers! 8,000 are needed!

First Academic Seminar
No it wasn't Trump University.

Today we briefly learned about the history of the nominating process. The nominating process has changed 4 times in its history. It began as a closed system in which only members of Congress where able to nominate and vote for candidates. Next, the convention system was put in place but there where 2 problems with it. Party leaders had leverage and patronage was used as a political tool. Then, the nominating process evolved into primary elections, but the real decision were made at the convention. Finally, the current system included a primary where delegates are elected who attend a convention to confirm the will of the people. It's very interesting and in how the process has evolved to its current state.
